Staying Accountable – Reading List

Back in January I talked about my return to good habits. The first one I discussed was getting back to reading, which was always an escape of mine. I realized as 2020 had come hurdling at us, I hadn’t read a book in some time.
Now that we are in Q2, I wanted to do my check in to keep myself accountable and let you all know I stuck with my goal! I finished 2.5 books last quarter and I am very glad I did. Given this corona virus, the timing couldn’t have been better with all of us house bound. With that being said, I decided I would give a quick synopsis of the books I read so that you can add a few new books to your reading list.

Killing Kryptonite – by John Bevere
This book changed me in the best way. In his book, John discusses the Christians battle with the things that distract us from a deep and profound relationship with the Father, he called it our kryptonite, liking it to Superman and his inability to function when kryptonite is present. If you are looking to remove the barriers and have a deeper relationship with Christ, I highly recommend it.

The Color of Money – Black Banks and the Racial Wealth Gap – by Mehrsa Baradaran
Talk about an intense history lesson! This book discusses black people’s experience with the banking system, the government and our legacy of exclusion from participating in the ‘American Dream’ of building generational wealth. Mehrsa gives an extraordinary breakdown of the history of that exclusion through government policy, both federal and local; how banking/finance works and its propensity to perpetuate its exclusion of black people from emancipation to present day. This is a must read!

Late Bloomers – The Power of Patience in a World Obsessed with Early Achievement – by Rich Karlgaard
Our society, scratch that, our world is obsessed with early achievement. From acing the SAT’s; getting into the ivy’s; making a million dollars before you are 25, society has shared a narrative that you must do the big things early in life. But what this book conveys, and I learned firsthand, is many people who have achieved did it later in life. In addition, late achievement brings with it a myriad of attributes that we, as a society take for granted. If you didn’t make it happen before 30 and you have that fire later in life, this is the book for you. (This is my .5 books, just about finish with it)

Stimulus Money – Where Will You Receive It?

The stimulus package has been passed and many Americans will receive a boost to their income in April.  If you meet the criteria set forth, you can receive at least $1200. But the question is; where will you receive this money?  Most of the money will be directly deposited to accounts tied to your last tax filing. But many members in our communities don’t have bank accounts, whether it be from previous issues with a bank account you had, mistrust, or a myriad of things, many in our community don’t have access to safe accounts.

This means many people will receive paper checks and take them to an expensive check casher to get their money.  This doesn’t have to be the case! There are many financial institutions that provide bank accounts to people even if you owe another bank some money.  Aside from any previous bad experiences, the bank or credit union is the best, safest and cheapest place for you to keep your money and conduct financial business.  Click the links below to find out the stimulus criteria and banks and credit unions that can help you keep your money in your pocket. In addition, I have attached the BankOn Seattle-King County grid that will give you the list of banks in the state that can provide safe banking opportunities with their individual requirements.

The Great Debate

The Great Debate

With social media abuzz around the great debate of ‘is this a new decade or not’, I for one am excited for what this year and the 20’s will bring!
I stopped practicing new years resolutions many years back when I realized, they just didn’t work as measurements that were going to be truly attainable in a new year.

What I have found effective is practicing goal setting throughout the year. BUT, I do have specific goals I set at the top of the year to get me motivated for the year to come. The beginning of a year is a time of reflection, renewal, reworking and revitalization for me; and this new year and decade (I chose a side) has come with a sense of accomplishment just waiting for me to get there!

In order to walk into what is waiting for me, I have a few things I do to prioritize:

1. Identify the most important thing(s) I need to accomplish this year with realistic dates set to accomplish them
2. WRITE IT DOWN and post it prominently so that I see them daily, weekly etc.….
3. Create a process and/or processes to ensure I have the tools and support necessary to achieve them
4. Revisit my list of goals at set times to ensure I am on track
5. Get started and stay committed to my process.

I am beyond excited for this year and what’s instore. Whether your decade started 01/01/20 or will start 01/01/21, I pray you walk in His will for your life and blow your goals out of the water! I know I am!

#LifeGoals

As 2019 comes to a speedy end, time is intent on trying to leave me behind with how fast it’s going by!  I don’t know about you, but I find myself having to take stock of my next moves much more often then I use to.  Time waits for no (wo)man and it certainly is not making any concessions for me; which brings me to #LifeGoals.

Taking stock or evaluating your next moves doesn’t have to involve writing a business plan for your life.  All your plans do not have to be on a 1 – 5-year track, short #LifeGoals are highly effective in helping one move forward in a very meaningful way.  Take for instance the holiday season we now find ourselves in, what goals have you set for this time? The new year is just around the corner and planning for your 2020 moves requires your immediate attention! This is the perfect opportunity to do things you’ve put off because you had it categorized under ‘next year I will….’; or ‘I will wait for the new year’; no do it now!  Take that mini-vacation you‘ve been putting off but need desperately; take your kid(s) to that place they refuse to leave you alone about; read that book that’s been sitting on your nightstand for a year; seriously start the process to becoming a homeowner with the simple act of pulling your credit and reviewing it; the opportunities for small victories are endless. Completing these small tasks can get you to your final goal(s) surprisingly quick and you don’t have to put them off or feel as if you don’t have time or capacity, just do it!

As for me, I followed this path and completed some major projects both at home and at work that probably may not have gotten accomplished had I not started small.  I am making headway towards my strategic goals that do require more time, thought and attention and I am feeling invigorated! Just take 1 – 2 hours out of a day, or every other day, and get started! #LifeGoals

But life stepped in and I haven’t been online for the past two months and I must admit, I did miss sharing information with the community.

My hope is as I return to my platforms, you continue to find value in the information I share. So thanks to all of you who engaged with us prior to our hiatus and our hope is you continue to find value as we move into another summer!

Is It Spring in Seattle??

Spring is here and it is time to get out of the house and explore the region!

Our weather gets a bad wrap up here in the Pacific Northwest.  It seems the dreaded gray takes over a good portion of our time here!  But this week has provided some much-needed sun, along with longer days and the opportunity to get outdoors and see what our region has to offer.

Here are a few things you can get out and do now that the sun has reminded us it still cares:

  1. If you have a yard, I am certain your grass mysteriously took over your yard overnight as mine has. This is a great opportunity to get some gardening started (or have someone start it for you).

  2. Take a walk; this is such a novel idea for some of us who are not the outdoorsy type, I NEED THE SUN!

  3. Take a ferry ride; this can be a great, quick, inexpensive getaway on Puget Sound.  If you ride at dusk, the city skyline is such a beautiful site as you sail into the harbor.

  4. Buy A House!  With spring in the air, we are moving into a very healthy market.  You can be in a new home before the summer is out.

  5. Sell Your Home! If you are looking to upgrade due to life changes, or you are ready to downgrade as empty nesters, now is the perfect time to start!

As a Real Estate Broker, most of my focus is typically on financial health and wellness and supporting my community in reaching their optimum financial well-being. However, wholistic health is the foundation of said well-being, from which all avenues of health flow. Spiritual, mental and physical health are the additional pillars that sprout from this foundation that is of importance to me and sharing information regarding these pillars will continue to be an additional focus of mine.

Throughout 2019, Bascomb Real Estate Group will share information with our community about partners we work with who provide access to maintaining your wholistic health. We will focus on these partners and provide a platform for them to share their message with the BRG community. This week we would like to focus on your physical health and wellness and how you achieve it.
Our partner, LaTaunya Witherspoon, who owns Spoon Fed Training in Renton, WA is focused on the physical health and wellness of the community. Spoon Fed Training not only offers workout opportunities for the community, but also provides support with how to maintain a healthy life with a wealth of information on their website. Black Homeownership in the Pacific Northwest

As a member of the National Associations of Real Estate Brokers, I am pleased to share one of the many great initiatives currently launched by NAREB, the 2 Million in 5 Initiative (2MN5).  This initiative focuses on 2 million new black homeowners nationwide in 5 years and was created out of a response to the State of Housing in Black America report that discusses the stark difference in homeownership rates between blacks and whites.  The current disparity (42% black vs 71% white) is yet another indicator of the inequities faced by black Americans but provides an amazing opportunity to be a part of this lofty objective proposed by NAREB.

Visit the NAREB website to learn more about 2MN5, you can read the report on the state of black homeownership and the objectives set by the organization to support NAREB’s motto of ‘Democracy in Housing’.  In addition, you can read about why an increase in black homeownership matters.  Contact Bascomb Real Estate Group to be 1 of the 2 million new black homeowners by 2023!
